What Fonologist is

Fonologist is a language listening game available on the web and as iOS and Android apps. You hear a short clip of speech and guess the language.

Accounts

On first open, the app creates an anonymous account with a random identifier so your progress can be saved on your device. No name or email is required to play.

If you choose to save your progress, you provide an email address, which is verified with a one time code. You can optionally add a display name.

Gameplay data we store

We store which clips were played, which language was guessed, whether it was correct, session scores, languages you marked as spoken (which may be inferred from your device language setting and can be changed in Profile), and your per-language progress.

Analytics

The app uses PostHog to record product usage events, for example a session starting, a question answered, or a screen viewed, tied to your account identifier, so we can see how the app is used and improve it. We do not use advertising networks, sell data, or work with data brokers.

Service providers

The following providers process data on our behalf, each only for the purpose listed: Supabase (database and authentication, United States), PostHog (analytics, United States), Resend (transactional email for sign-in codes), Vercel (web hosting), and Cloudflare (audio file delivery).

Cookies and local storage

We use cookies and local storage to keep you signed in and remember your theme and accessibility settings. We do not use third party advertising cookies.

Retention

Gameplay data is kept while your account exists. Anonymous guest accounts that never completed a session are deleted automatically after 30 days.

Deletion

You can delete your account from the Profile screen at any time. This removes your account, profile, and progress immediately. Gameplay records are kept in anonymised form, with no account identifier, for aggregate statistics. Clip reports you sent are kept with no account identifier. If you cannot access the app, email hello@fonologist.com from the email address on your account and we delete it within 30 days. Step by step instructions are at fonologist.com/delete-account. Children

The app is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their data.

Changes

This policy may be updated. The date at the top changes when it is.

Audio

The language clips in the game are recordings from the public Mozilla Common Voice dataset, not recordings of players. The app never records your microphone.
